I'd just like to welcome you to the Richard Farthing website and perhaps tell you a little about myself and what I am doing at the moment. In addition, I'd like to let you know a bit about my past.
At present I am a solo artist as well as playing in a band. I play guitar and sing (and occasionally keyboards). From 1985 to 1998 I had my own band The Confident Tricksters which played all over the North of England at venues such as pubs, clubs, colleges, community centres, town halls etc. The Tricksters released records, recorded our own songs (I was the principal songwriter in the band) and had our songs played on the radio. We also appeared in the local and national press. Although I am based in Doncaster, I have been playing quite a bit in the South of England as well. I like to play on my own i.e. without backing tapes. My current set includes everything from Duke Ellington to The Smiths, although the six artists I tend to rely on are Elvis, Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Stones, Bob Dylan and The Kinks. This, I find, seems to go down well with virtually every sort of audience. From students at Universities to the older generation at weddings and social clubs I am happy to entertain anyone. I also enjoy getting the audiences to sing along and help me out and even suggest songs for me to play. If I know it I will play it --- just request a song. The good thing about being on my own is that every set is different and I can play different songs every night. I like to intersperse songs that have a rock'n'roll attitude with old music hall songs and even songs from more recent times although I like Sixties songs the best. I favour songs with good lyrics and short snappy tunes. From November 2008, the Confident Tricksters are back in action and are also available for booking. The acoustic duo I had with John McKevitt on harmonica split at the beginning of April 2007. I am currently working solo and playing in the (reformed) Confident Tricksters with the original line up Steve Crowe on bass and Nick Hillier on drums. We have just started playing gigs again and our first gig was at the Creykes Arms, Rawcliffe on 1st November 2008. It's been fun playing electric guitar again on my old Vox AC50 after 6 years playing acoustic. In addition I am recording some new songs with Wavelength Music for my first solo album (DEC 2008).
